Compared to bad forecasts for this year, to date, in full production, the reality is far worse.
Although the olive harvest tends to alternate years in favor and more scarce crops, this year the production corresponds to about half compared to last year.
The least productive areas: the southern and Liguria, with a drop that in some cases exceed 50% as in the case of Sicily and Calabria.
The main antagonist is the climate, with alternating phases of heat, cold and rain that has disfavored insect control, first of all the oil fly. In opposite trend the center and the north which, with more limited production areas have been able to operate more effective prevention and treatments.
Fears for the price trend, which in relation to domestic production could suffer a nose-up and encourage the importation of foreign poor quality oil.
