The ideal feed for laying hens depends on the season, but in general should be made from a high percentage of feed for chicks and variable percentages of corn, bran, oyster shells and salt. The diet should be rich in vitamins, carbohydrates and protein, and the animals must have available always fresh and clean water, placed in the appropriate drinking troughs.
If these animals reared outside, they will provide themselves to the protein requirements by eating insects and earthworms. The feeding troughs will fill in the late afternoon, to stimulate the movement of the hens during the day in search of food. The cereals, as well as fresh food you'll want to give the hens, will never be scattered on the ground, because the particular shape of the beak would not allow them to eat easily and because food risk being contaminated by manure.
