It's an alteration of the internal shaft tissues caused by fungal attack as a result of plant injury. The most vulnerable parts made from accidental breakage, wrong or excessive pruning, frost or insects, in fact, can be attacked by fungi spores harmful for wood.
The main symptoms are: loss of vigor, fall foliage, wood rot and the presence of fungi.
The interventions to be performed in these cases involve the removal of the damaged part of trunk or bark, that must be effected with the chainsaw; later you should disinfect wounds with very concentrated solutions of iron or copper sulfate and replace the cut parts by studying an ad-hoc pruning and growing branches or suckers near the severed area; if the rot comes from a poor drainage of the water that stagnates on the trunk, we should pierce the trunk and in any case favor as much as possible the circulation of air.
