mimosa

Since over seventy years mimosa is the flower that in Italy, and not only, is given to women on March 8th.
The International Women's Day was set up to commemorate social, economic and political achievements and the discrimination and violence that women have been and are still object in almost every part of the world.
In Italy this anniversary was introduced by feminist movements after the Second World War, first in the free territories of Italy, then from 1946 throughout the peninsula. From that year, the symbol of mimosa appeared, from an idea by the feminists Teresa Noce, Rita Montagnana and Teresa Mattei.
The choice fell back on the mimosa for both the seasonality of this plant, one of the first to flourish in spring, both for its characteristics as the yellow color that represents joy and vitality, and resistance despite the delicate aspect.
However, the recurrence of 8th March in Italy, although proposed several times, was celebrated only since the 1970s, when the feminist movement took life.
