May is the second spring month of the year, when the climate gets warmer, days get longer and the nature awakes completely from winter. For this reason among ancient peoples, to this month were associated elements of light and earth, identified with the goddess Maia, from which "May", to which were dedicated many festivals with floral tributes (like Floralia of ancient Rome).
With the advent of Christianity, the Church drew these traditions dedicating the month to Virgin Mary and replacing the hawthorn flower associated to the goddess Maia, rose symbol of Mary.
May 1st is celebrated in many countries around the world as Workers Day, in memory American martyrs slain during demonstrations for workers rights in 1886, including the right to working time up to 8 hours.
