The absorption by inhalation is the most common route of poisoning that occurs when a chemical is present in form of gases, fumes, vapors, or aerosols. The effect may be limited to the upper respiratory system or damage the lungs.
If the inhalation of these substances occurs repetitively, you may develop chronic conditions such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis, fibrosis and emphysema.
In particular respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis or pulmonary edema may result from inhalation of high concentrations of chlorine, ammonia, fire fumes. While the processes involving biohazard exposure may be responsible for lung infections such as tuberculosis or viral pneumonia (SARS in health care workers, avian influenza in poultry workers and veterinarians), bacterial or fungal infection (aspergillosis in millers).
