Orobanche crenata

The cultivation of beans can be hampered by the birth of parasitic plants that are able to inhibit the growth and development of plants and lead to the formation of rusty spots on the pods. The scientific name of this parasitic plant Orobanche crenata, but is known as the bean broomrape, sporchia or flame grass. It's an annual herbaceous plant devoid of chlorophyll, which is able to draw the sap directly from neighboring plants. This particular species prefers legumes such as broad beans and is able to withstand all winter in the form of seed, then reappear in the spring. You can prevent the growth plowing the soil before sowing or prior to the cultivation of beans with "trap" plantations as garlic, sunflower, clover or soybean. An alternative may be the manual eradication of these plants which are a culinary specialty in Puglia cuisine.
