castagne

This year the production of chestnuts will remain below the 20 million kilograms of the last year, well below historical averages.
It is estimated that Campania, largest Italian producer has reduced by 90% the production because of the gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus), a Chinese parasite that causes the death of trees.
In recent years the insect had only attacked the north of Italy, who has since learned to tackle it introducing his natural enemy, the Torymus sinensis.
The parasite, in fact, it was only recently introduced to the South and the less than optimal weather conditions did not allow for a timely and effective action, seriously compromising the year.
The recommendation this year is therefore to pay attention to the origin of the products, which will be imported massively seen the dramatic decline of the Italian production.
