It is believed the lemon was originally an hybrid between the pomelo, a very old citrus, and cedar.
It is a fruit tree that can bloom and bear fruit twice a year. Its fruits are used for multipurpose uses especially culinary, but also for the hygiene of the house, the person, and as a natural remedy for some health problems.
The main organoleptic properties relate to the high concentration of vitamin C, citric acid, limonene and modest amounts of other vitamins and minerals. It is an important source of natural antioxidants, useful to combat free radicals and also this food has the important property of being metabolized by the body as alkaline, helping to regulate the pH, decreasing the chances of getting sick.
The cultivars of lemon grown most in Italy are: Femminello Comune, Monachello, Interdonato, Femminello Zagara Bianca, Femminello Siracusano and Femminello Apireno Continella.
Those most grown abroad: Eureka, Lisbon, Verna or Berna, Mesero, Gallego, Genoa, Karystini.
