arum

The wild boar is an omnivorous animal, but since its main activity is rooting revolting the clods in search of food, it's mainly attracted by bulbs, tubers and rhizomes. Wild plants particularly appreciated to wild boars are the spontaneous orchids and the arum like the cuckoo-pint, wild calla lily variety. Especially at the beginning of spring, the boars seem particularly attracted to the rhizomes of the arum. This plant, toxic to man, is common in the undergrowths, margins of fields and roads. The ungulates, endowed with an extraordinary sense of smell and aided by the incredible characteristic of these plants to emit heat during the flowering, actively seek them, stepping also in the villages. When they find them, literally plow the ground devouring greedily the bulb and all the hold parts of the plant. In fact, the rhizome of the arum contains up to 70% of starch. If these plants are present at the edges of our gardens, the boars will first consume these and then dedicate their attentions to our vegetable gardens.
