olio

Originally the olive oil covered an almost marginal role in the kitchen. Greeks and Romans, in fact, could not get a fairly refined oil, so much so that this became rancid quickly, so they preferred to eat olives in form of various preparations. Mainly the oil was used for hygiene and care of the body: to massage, to treat wounds, burns, skin lacerations, to produce soap, etc.
The anointing of the body was widely practiced by athletes, to escape the opponent's grasp and moisturizing purpose and by soldiers to protect themselves from the cold.
Of fundamental importance was its use in religious rituals and preparation of corpses, as well as major medical remedy in the event of poisoning, digestive disorders, infections and for lighting.
