In order to preserve the important olive heritage of Salento, already severely compromised during Xylella emergency, the research working on several fronts.
For the fight against this bacterium, which could spread on other crops and even in other areas, research is working by fighting insects that spread it, searching for molecules enemy of the bacterium, seeking bomb virus and naturally immune plants.
So far 2 varieties of olive tree have been discovered, though not entirely immune: Leccino and Favolosa. Finding plants resistant to wild varieties also drives research to try to save the centuries-old plants, not least through the grafts, as well as with new plant-based tests aimed at combating not only Xylella, but also its main carrier, the "froghopper" Philaenus spumarius.
