Hydroponics is, together with aeroponic and aquaponics, a type of crop that not using the soil. With this technique, the soil is replaced by inert material: expanded clay, pumice stone, pearlite, coconut fiber, mineral wool, etc. and the plants are irrigated with a solution of water and inorganic compounds to provide all the nutrients that allow the vegetative growth.
It’s a technique that allows to save water and space, infact are frequent hydroponic installations in more levels or even vertically.
This type of cultivation is carried mainly indoors in greenhouses or at home and has the great advantage to limit a lot of attacks by insects or bacteria that may come from the ground or from outside. With the right equipment and some researches, you can easily build your own DIY hydroponic system.
