lasagna gardening

The so-called “lasagna gardening” is a way of cultivating based on the principles of permaculture, according to which it's not desirable an intensive agriculture, discordant and aggressive.
To cultivate with lasagna gardening is not necessary, infact, prepare the soil by plowing, fertilizing, digging, milling and so on, because will add to the earth several layers of material that will form the bed of the growing seedlings. For these reasons it is preferred by those who own particularly hard soil difficult to work.
Just like a lasagna are arranged different layers that will form the compost, which will feed the plants without need of fertilizers and which will promote good drainage. To begin we can put into small areas, and then expand the culture to larger land.

The layers to be placed on are formed by:

1- newspaper or cardboard, careful to eliminate any metal pins and adhesive tape;

2- green waste (nitrogen source), such as fruit and vegetable scraps and grass clippings;

3- brown waste (carbon source), such as straw, hay, dead leaves;

4- mature compost or a mixture of peat and compost;

5- mulch, such as straw or pine needles.

After composing the layers and wet the "lasagna" you can proceed to the transplantation of seedlings, easier to sowing. Must remember to add other material that the volume gradually decreases and gently stir everything with a pitchfork.
